Day 1: Ghost

“But Daddy, I can’t go to sleep, there’s a ghost inside the closet and he’s waiting for me to fall asleep before he strikes.”

“Now, Sally, that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. You’re eight years old—too old to believe in that nonsense. “ He pulled the switch for the light in the closet to show her that there was nothing to be frightened of. “There, see, nobody’s in here. Now, go to sleep.”

Paul tucked her in and kissed Sally good night for what would be the last time.

The next morning, He found her lifeless body, white as a ghost, limp. “Caroline! Come quick” He yelled, beckoning his wife. After that, he was speechless.

He didn’t utter a single syllable for weeks. He didn’t know what to say to his grief-stricken wife. Mostly, he blamed himself because he had dismissed his daughter’s fears and now she was gone.

Paul and Caroline never found out why their daughter died. They refused to perform an autopsy. They didn’t want to know why she died, they wanted to remember how she lived.
